How would it feel if you were in a big city with no clue about how to reach your destination? The very size of the city will prevent you from taking any route on a hunch because the chances of taking the right route would be one in a million. Now imagine if you are in the same city and this time it is not just the route that you are unaware off but the destination itself! While the situation is indeed scary the chances of such an event happening in real life is unlikely. However, it is entirely possible that such a thing could happen with your life.

Our life stretches before our eyes like a vast city. Many situations turn up in life when we know where to go but are unsure about how to get there. But the real problem is when we are not even sure what is the meaning of life itself. Then we are like the traveller in a city with no idea of where to go and how to get there. At such a juncture all we might be able to utter are the words, “meaningless, meaningless…utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” Fortunately this sense of meaninglessness need not pervade our life since there is a truth that can give new meaning to our lives.

The Bible tells us that we humans were created by the almighty God in his own image with a very special purpose in mind. All of us are meant to share in the loving friendship and fellowship that God offers to everyone. However, this is not possible because of the gulf that separates humans and God created by our propensity to sin and rebel against God. However, instead of condemning us God continues to long for sharing his love with us. Not only does he wish to share his love with us, but in a historic event he actually did. As a demonstration of his love, God gave his very own Son, Jesus Christ, as a sacrifice for sin to bring us sinful humans back into his friendship. Since it is a relationship of love that God is offering us, we too need to respond to his love by accepting the truth of what he has done and thereby enter into a wonderful friendship with God. Once this happens, we will realise the true meaning of life which is joyful communion with God.
